Mandisa is the first to kid this year, scheduled for March 7. After last February's Snowmaggedon it seemed like a good idea to move kidding back a bit, let's not start in January. The thought was that being without power for a week takes a lot of the fun out of feeding the little piranhas. We did NOT consult the ladies on our decision. This was a mistake. They were NOT HAPPY. |
When their amorous intentions were repeatedly thwarted they became vindictive. FINE, you don't want early babies how do like me kidding in JUNE? HMM? How about JULY! We finally caught on and arranged dates as desired but for some of the girls it was not enough. Never enough. Translation: I can go back to visit the buck as many times as I want, so there. Don't get your knitting needles out-when I finally decide to settle they won't need jammies, they might need a fan.
We have now gotten to the point where we are threatening anyone that wags even in jest. Folks are asking about our breeding schedule, when will it be posted? All I can tell you is we haven't figured out a way to list all the possible dates.
Ultrasounds have confirmed some girls took the boys seriously but there are many more to go. Just about the time you think one might get to 30 days for a blood test- there goes the tail, the plaintive cries, the batting of eyelashes.
The bucks of course think this is the BEST year EVER! Wow, did they win the lottery or what?
The good news in all this is that we will have year round milk this year. No milking vacation on the horizon. And so we wait with Mandisa, her heavy sighs waft through the barn from her chosen boudoir. Her children will be spoiled, which is as it should be for the first arrivals.
